Gunpla Name Guide

For those who are new to the hobby, here is a simple guide on how Gundam model kit (Gunpla) names are structured to help you better understand what you buying.

On our store each product name is structured in this way:

1. The Grade of the model.

2. The Name of the model.

3. The Scale of the model.

THE GRADE

Example: HG, RG, MG, Full Mechanics, etc.

Each kit is assigned a Grade according to its level of aesthetic detail, functionality of the parts and overall size. A brief description of a kit's Grade is provided on each product page.

Recommendations:

  • For smaller models try HG or RG.
  • For larger models try MG or Full Mechanics.
  • For high levels of detail try RG or MG.
  • For cost effectiveness try HG or Full Mechanics.

Here is an article further explaining Grades.

Note: It is also common for the model's series/timeline to be abbreviated and inserted after the Grade.

For example if the series is Iron Blooded Orphans, it could be abbreviated to the letters IBO and placed next to the Grade, which would be written as "HGIBO".

For the majority of our products we don't list the series/timeline in our names just for simplicity, but series/timeline abbreviations are common when shopping for Gunpla.

THE NAME

Example: ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos

This is simply the name of the Gundam from the show, book, game, etc that it originates from. Like most devices and machines, Gundams typically have an identification number/letter sequence like "ASW-G-08" as well as a plain name such as "Barbatos".

THE SCALE

Example: 1/144 Scale

Scale refers to the size of the model compared to the full size of the Gundam if it were to exist in reality. In simplified terms, if we were going to create a 1/144 scale model, we would take all the parts of a full size Gundam and then shrink everything down to 144th the size.

FINAL EXAMPLE

MG ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos 1/100 Scale Model Kit

  • MG refers to the Grade of the kit.
  • ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos is the name.
  • And 1/100 refers to the Scale.
